Psalms 89:6

"The heavens will praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones."

Key Reflection

In the context of Psalms 89:6, the original audience would have understood that God's faithfulness and wonders were so extraordinary that even the heavens, as a symbol of the divine realm, would join in praise. This idea reflects a common ancient Near Eastern literary device where nature or celestial bodies are personified to express the magnitude of divine actions. The assembly of holy ones likely refers to angels or other divine beings who would witness and celebrate God's faithful covenant with his people, emphasizing the universality and significance of this covenant in the broader theological landscape of the Hebrew Bible.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

For who in the heaven ... -literally, In the cloud; that is, in the sky. The idea is that none in the regions above - the upper world - can be compared with God. There is no other god - there is no one among the angels, great and glorious as they are, that can be likened to him. Who among the sons of the mighty ... -The angels - regarded as mighty. The “sons of the mighty” on earth are spoken of as mighty men - as men of power - as men of exalted rank. So here, the idea is, that none of the angels, though of exalted rank (“principalities,” or “powers,” compareRomans 8:38;Ephesians 1:21), could be put in comparison with God.
