Psalms 78:46

"He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 78:46, God is described as sending plagues upon the people to bring judgment for their sins. The use of "swarms of flies" and "frogs" reflects the earlier account in Exodus where these creatures were sent specifically against Egypt (Exodus 8:20-32). These pests would have been particularly debilitating, as flies could spread disease and frogs would have caused widespread disruption to daily life. This divine retribution served both as a reminder of God's power and a punishment for the people's disobedience, aligning with the broader narrative of God's covenant and his faithful judgments in the Old Testament.

He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar -The increase or the produce of their fields.Exodus 10:12-14. The wordחסילchâsı̂yl- is supposed to denote a species of locust rather than the caterpillar. It literally means the devourer. In our version, however, it is uniformly rendered caterpillar as here;1Ki 8:37;2 Chronicles 6:28;Isaiah 33:4;Joel 1:4;Joel 2:25. It occurs nowhere else. And their labor unto the locust -The fruit of their labor; the harvests in their fields.
