Matthew 26:62

"and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.’”"

Key Reflection

Jesus' statement about destroying and rebuilding the temple symbolizes his ultimate act of redemption through his crucifixion and resurrection. This foreshadows how his death and subsequent triumph will mark a new era, transforming the physical temple into a spiritual one where true worship can occur.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verses 62,63. Jesus held his peace. Was silent. He knew that the evidence did not even appear to amount to anything worth a reply. He knew that they were aware of that, and that feeling that, the high priest attempted to draw something from him, on which they could condemn him. I adjure thee by the living God. I put thee upon thy oath before God. This was the usual form of putting an oath among the Jews. It implies, calling God to witness the truth of what was said.
