In Matthew 17:8, Jesus' actions of touching the transfigured figures and commanding them to rise and not be afraid would have been profoundly significant for his disciples. In first-century Jewish culture, physical contact was rare between a teacher and students; moreover, the presence of Elijah and Moses, along with the divine voice from the cloud, underscored their exalted status. For Jesus to touch these figures symbolized both his recognition of their special role and his reassurance that they should not fear the revelation they had just witnessed.
