Matthew 17:22

"But this kind doesn’t go out except by prayer and fasting.”"

Key Reflection

In first-century Jewish culture, prayer and fasting were powerful spiritual disciplines often employed to seek divine intervention for miraculous deliverance or healing. When Jesus spoke of this “kind” (a term likely referring to a particularly stubborn demon), his audience would have understood that overcoming such a challenge required intense spiritual effort. This instruction underscores the belief in the efficacy of prayer and fasting as means to combat supernatural powers, reflecting a common understanding among Jews of the time that divine assistance could be sought through these practices.
