Matthew 15:8

"You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,"

Key Reflection

These words from Jesus are directed at his critics who were challenging his disciples for not adhering to traditional hand-washing practices. By quoting Isaiah 29:13, Jesus highlights that his opponents' religious practices were merely external and lacked genuine faith and devotion. The original audience would have recognized the historical context of Isaiah's prophecy, which similarly condemned those who honored God only with their lips while their hearts remained far from him. This parallel underscores Jesus’ accusation that his critics were no different from the hypocrites Isaiah described.
