Mark 5:27

"and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,"

Key Reflection

In Mark 5:27, the woman who sought healing through Jesus had endured a desperate and prolonged struggle. She had visited numerous physicians, which in first-century Palestine likely meant seeking treatment from various healers, including both local practitioners and those traveling to the region. Her financial resources were completely exhausted, yet her condition did not improve; instead, it worsened. This context highlights the desperation of the woman and sets up the miraculous nature of Jesus' healing, as his intervention contrasts sharply with the ineffective treatments she had previously sought.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 27. Came in the press behind. In the crowd that pressed upon him. This was done to avoid being noticed. It was an act of faith. She was full of confidence that Jesus was able to heal: but she trembled on account of her conscious unworthiness, thus illustrating the humility and confidence of a sinner coming ta God for pardon and life. {i} "touched his garment" 2 Ki 13:21; Mt 14:30; Ac 5:15; 19:12 __________________________________________________________________
