Luke 24:50

"Behold, I send out the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 24:50, Jesus instructs his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This event would have been seen as a fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28-32) and an assurance that God's promised gift of power would enable them to carry out their mission effectively. The original audience would have understood this promise as a direct connection between Jesus' resurrection, the ascension, and the imminent coming of the Holy Spirit, marking the beginning of the church’s ministry in Jerusalem and beyond.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verses 50,51. To Bethany. See Barnes "Mr 16:19". Bethany was on the eastern declivity of the Mount of Olives, from which our Lord was taken up to heaven, Ac 1:12. Bethany was a favoured place. It was the abode of Martha, and Mary, and Lazarus, and our Saviour delighted to be there. From this place, also, he ascended to his Father and our Father, and to his God and our God. While he blessed them. While he commanded his benediction to rest upon them; while he assured them of his favour, and commended them to the protection and guidance of God, in the dangers, trials, and conflicts which they were to meet in a sinful and miserable world.
