Judges 5:19

"Zebulun was a people that jeopardized their lives to the death; Naphtali also, on the high places of the field."

Key Reflection

Zebulun and Naphtali, two of the twelve tribes of Israel, demonstrated exceptional courage by risking their lives in battle. This verse highlights their bravery in fighting on high ground, a position typically considered advantageous but also perilous due to its exposed nature. The original audience would have understood this as a testament to these tribes’ unwavering commitment and valor in defending their homeland against enemy forces.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The Canaanite hosts are now described, led to battle by their numerous kings. (CompareJoshua 12:21.) They took no gain of money -i. e. either they got no booty, as they expected, or, they did not fight for plunder, but for life and victory (compareJudges 4:16andJudges 5:30).
