Judges 5:11

"“Speak, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets, and you who walk by the way."

Key Reflection

In Judges 5:11, Deborah addresses a series of social classes with her prophetic song. She calls out to those who travel in comfort—those riding on white donkeys (a sign of nobility and wealth), sitting on rich carpets, or walking as common people. This verse highlights the social stratification of Deborah's time while also setting up a contrast between the elite and the broader population. Through this address, Deborah emphasizes that even those in positions of privilege will acknowledge the victory over their enemies, underscoring the unity and triumph that transcends social status.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The sense of the King James Version is that, whereas formerly they could not go in safety to draw water from their wells, but were shot at by the archers of the enemy, now they were delivered from such tumults; and standing round the wells in security rehearsed the righteous acts of the Lord in delivering them, and “the righteous acts of His government in Israel.” (SeeJudges 5:7).
