Joshua 8:29 describes how Joshua destroyed Ai by burning it and turning it into a permanent ruin as a lasting reminder of God’s judgment. This act served both to terrify the nearby Canaanite cities, preventing rebellion against Israel, and to fulfill the divine command for complete destruction of the enemies (Deuteronomy 13:15-16). The original audience would have understood this as a demonstration of God's power and the consequences of disobedience or resistance to the Israelites.
