Joshua 8:18

"There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel."

Key Reflection

This passage underscores the complete absence of resistance among the inhabitants of Ai and Bethel against the Israelites. The openness with which they pursued Israel highlights their lack of concern for their own safety or city's defense, revealing a sense of panic or desperation that left them vulnerable to Israel’s attack.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

No doubt Joshua had ascended the heights, most likely those to the north of the valley, so as to separate himself from the flying Israelites on the lower ground, and to be visible to the men in ambush behind the city. He now, at the command of God, gives the appointed signal to the ambush.
