Joshua 2:6

"About the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly. You may catch up with them.”"

Key Reflection

In Joshua 2:6, we see a scene where two spies are sent by Joshua to spy on Jericho. The verse describes how these men left the city just as it began to grow dark and the city gate was being closed for the night. This detail highlights the urgency of their mission and suggests that they needed to act quickly before their presence could be noticed. The cultural context is significant here, as in ancient times, the closing of the city gates marked the end of safe travel for the day. The fact that these men left at this time underscores both the risk they were taking and the divine timing that ensured their safe passage out of Jericho, setting the stage for Rahab's pivotal role in hiding them from the city’s inhabitants.

Stalks of flax -literally, “the carded fibres of the tree.” The flax in Palestine grew to more than three feet in height, with a stalk as thick as a cane. It was probably with the flax stalks, recently cut (compareExodus 9:31, note) and laid out on the house roof to dry, that Rahab hid the spies.
