John 8:7

"They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger."

Key Reflection

Jesus' action of writing on the ground symbolized His refusal to judge, redirecting the focus back to their own sins. This gesture also foreshadowed the coming judgment, showing that it was they who needed to be judged rather than Jesus.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 7. They continued asking him. They pressed the question upon him. They were determined to extort an answer from him, and showed a perseverance in evil which has been unhappily often imitated. Is without sin. That is, without this particular sin; he who has not himself been guilty of this very crime--for in this place the connection evidently demands this meaning. See De 17:6,7.
