John 5:29

"Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice"

Key Reflection

In first-century Judea, tombstones often bore inscriptions and were used as gathering places for mourners. The idea that “all who are in the tombs will hear his voice” would have resonated deeply with this context, suggesting a literal resurrection where even the dead buried in tombs would awaken to hear Jesus’ command. This verse taps into the cultural belief in bodily resurrection and the afterlife, presenting a vivid image of a cosmic awakening where the dead are called forth by Christ’s authoritative voice, aligning with the expectation of the coming judgment day described in apocalyptic literature of the time.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 29. Shall come forth. Shall come out of their graves. This was the language which he used when he raised up Lazarus, Joh 11:43,4. They that have done good. That is, they who are righteous, or they who have by their good works shown that they were the friends of Christ. See Mt 25:34-36. Resurrection of life. Religion is often called life, and everlasting life. See Barnes "Joh 5:24". In the resurrection the righteous will be raised up to the full enjoyment and perpetual security of that life. It is also called the resurrection of life, because there shall be no more death, Re 21:4.
