John 1:20

"This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”"

Key Reflection

John 1:20 serves as a pivotal moment in the narrative of Jesus' ministry, highlighting both John the Baptist's humility and the religious authorities' resistance to recognizing Jesus. When the priests and Levites from Jerusalem questioned John about his identity, he responded, "I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know." This response was laden with significance; it acknowledged his role as a preparer of the way (verse 29) while subtly directing attention to Jesus, who stood before them unrecognized. In first-century Jewish culture, John's humility and directness underscored the contrast between religious expectations and divine revelation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 20. I am not the Christ. This confession proves that John was not an impostor. He had a wide reputation. The nation was expecting that the Messiah was about to come, and multitudes were ready to believe that John was he, Lu 3:15. If John had been an impostor he would have taken advantage of this excited state of public feeling, proclaimed himself to be the Messiah, and formed a large party in his favour.
