Job 35:8

"If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand?"

Key Reflection

Job 35:8 poses a profound challenge to the concept of righteousness and its practical implications. In this verse, Elihu is questioning Job's assertion that his integrity should be recognized by God. He asks, "If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand?" This rhetorical question suggests that even if Job maintains his righteousness, it does not seem to have the expected impact or recognition within their relationship. The verse invites a deeper reflection on the nature of true justice and the limits of human actions in the eyes of God, highlighting the complexity of divine judgment and the need for faith beyond mere moral uprightness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thy wickedness may hurt a Man as thou art -That is, it may injure him, but not God. He is too far exalted above man, and too independent of man in his sources of happiness, to be affected by what he can do. The object of the whole passageJob 35:6-8is, to show that God is independent of people, and is not governed in his dealings with them on the principles which regulate their conduct with each other. One man may be greatly benefited by the conduct of another, and may feel under obligation to reward him for it; or he maybe greatly injured in his person, property, or reputation, by another, and will endeavor to avenge himself. But nothing of this kind can happen to God.
