Job 35:10

"“By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out. They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty."

Key Reflection

In Job 35:10, Elihu is addressing the plight of the oppressed who cry out to God for relief from their suffering due to oppression. The phrase “by reason of the arm of the mighty” suggests that even when people appeal to a powerful and divine figure like God, their cries often go unanswered, highlighting a tension in Job's narrative about why the righteous suffer while wickedness goes unchecked. This verse resonates with an original audience familiar with the social and political realities of oppression by strong rulers or institutions, making them keenly aware that even求助于强大的神明也未必能带来改变。

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

But none saith -That is, none of the oppressed and down-trodden say. This is the solution which Elihu gives of what appeared so mysterious to Job, and of what Elihu regarded as the source of the bitter complaints of Job. The solution is, that when people are oppressed they do not apply to God with a proper spirit, and look to him that they may find relief. It was a principle with Elihu, that if when a man was afflicted he would apply to God with a humble and penitent heart, he would hear him, and would withdraw his hand; see this principle fully stated inJob 33:19-26.
