Job 31:8

"if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,"

Key Reflection

In Job 31:8, Job is speaking about his own integrity and righteousness before God. The original audience would understand this as a pledge to adhere strictly to moral conduct. Specifically, Job states that if he has strayed from the path of righteousness—meaning if his actions have been guided by selfish desires or impure motives—he recognizes the gravity of such transgressions and acknowledges his vulnerability to divine judgment. This verse showcases Job’s commitment to maintaining his purity and integrity, reflecting the cultural emphasis on personal responsibility and the fear of God in ancient Israelite society.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Then let me sow, and let another eat -This is the imprecation which he invokes, in case he had been guilty in this respect. He consented to sow his fields, and let others enjoy the harvest. The expression used here is common in the Scriptures to denote insecurity of property or calamity in general; seeLeviticus 26:16: “And ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it;” compareDeuteronomy 28:30;Amos 9:13-14. Yea, let my offspring be rooted out -Or, rather, “Let what I plant be rooted up.” So Umbreit, Noyes, Schultens, Rosenmuller, Herder, and Lee understand it.
