Job 31:7

"(let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity);"

Key Reflection

In the cultural context of ancient Israel and the Near East, weighing oneself metaphorically in a balance was a way to publicly declare one's righteousness or integrity. Job 31:7 reflects Job’s unwavering conviction that his actions have been just and honest, even as he faces severe trials. By invoking God to weigh him in an even balance, Job is essentially challenging his accusers—whether they be literal critics or metaphorical forces of evil—to prove otherwise, thereby demonstrating the righteousness of his stance before both man and God.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

If my step hath turned out of the way -The path in which I ought to walk - the path of virtue. And mine heart walked after mine eyes -That is, if I have coveted what my eyes have beheld; or if I have been determined by the appearance of things rather than by what is right, I consent to bear the appropriate punishment. And if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands -To have clean hands is emblematic of innocence;Job 17:9;Psalms 24:4; compareMatthew 27:24. The word blot here means stain, blemish:Daniel 1:4.
