Jeremiah 23:6

"“Behold, the days come,” says the LORD, “that I will raise to David a righteous Branch; and he will reign as king and deal wisely, and will execute justice and righteousness in the land."

Key Reflection

In the context of the sixth century BCE, when Jeremiah spoke these words to Judah, the promise of a "righteous Branch" from David was both a comfort and a challenge. The people were living under foreign rule by the Babylonians and facing internal corruption among their leaders. The audience would have understood this prophecy as a hopeful message that despite their current circumstances, God would one day restore justice and righteousness through a future king descended from David. This king would reign wisely, bringing about moral and political renewal in the land—a vision of ultimate salvation that pointed beyond contemporary struggles to a future hope.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

This is his name whereby he shall be called -From remote antiquity the person here spoken of has been understood to be “the righteous germ,” and this alone is in accordance with the grammar and the sense. Nevertheless, because JeremiahJeremiah 33:15-16applies the name also to Jerusalem, some understand it of Israel. the Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS -Messiah is here called: (1) Yahweh, and (2) our righteousness, because He justifies us by His merits. Some render, He by whom Yahweh works righteousness.
