Jeremiah 15:8

"I have winnowed them with a fan in the gates of the land. I have bereaved them of children. I have destroyed my people. They didn’t return from their ways."

Key Reflection

The verse from Jeremiah 15:8 describes God's harsh judgment upon his people, using vivid imagery that resonated deeply with the original audience. By saying he winnowed them like grain with a fan at the gates of their land, God alludes to a thorough and relentless purging process akin to separating chaff from wheat in ancient times. Bereaving them of children and destroying his people indicate severe consequences such as famine or warfare, which would have been devastating for a society highly dependent on family and community bonds. The fact that they did not return from their ways suggests persistent rebellion against God's commands, despite these dire judgments.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Translate, “I have brought upon them, even upon the mother of the young man, a spoiler etc.” The word rendered “young man” means a picked warrior. The mother has borne a valiant champion; but neither his prowess nor the numerous offspring of the other can avail to save those who gave them birth; war bereaves both alike. At noonday -i. e., unexpectedly, as armies used to rest at noon (seeJeremiah 6:4note). I have caused him ... -Rather, “I have brought suddenly upon her,” the mother of the young warrior, “anguish and terrors.”
