Isaiah 59:2

"Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it can’t save; nor his ear dull, that it can’t hear."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 59:2 emphasizes God's omnipotence and willingness to intervene, despite the sense of divine detachment often felt by the Israelites. The imagery of God’s “hand” being shortened or his ear becoming dull would suggest inaction or inability to hear, but these phrases are used poetically to convey that such limitations do not apply to God. This verse underscores that God is always ready and able to extend his saving grace, even when it feels otherwise due to human sinfulness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

But your iniquities -That is, the sins which the prophet had specified in the previous chapter, and which he proceeds further to specify in this. Have separated -The word used here (בדלbâdal) conveys the idea of division, usually by a curtain or a wallExodus 26:33;Ezekiel 42:20. Thus the ‘firmament’ (רקיעrâqı̂ya‛, “expanse”) is said to have “divided” or “separated” (מבדילmabedı̂yl) the waters from the watersGenesis 1:6. The idea here is, that their sins were like a partition between them and God, so that there was no contact between them and him.
