Isaiah 40:17

"Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering."

Key Reflection

This verse highlights that even abundant natural resources and sacrifices are insufficient to satisfy God. It emphasizes the need for genuine repentance and moral purity over mere ritualistic offerings.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Are as nothing -This expresses literally what had been expressed by the beautiful and striking imagery above. Less than nothing -A strong hyperbolic expression denoting the utter insignificance of the nations as compared with God. Such expressions are common in the Scriptures. And vanity -Hebrew,תהוtôhû- ‘Emptiness;’ the word which inGenesis 1:2is rendered ‘without form.’
