Isaiah 40:16

"Behold, the nations are like a drop in a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on a balance. Behold, he lifts up the islands like a very little thing."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 40:16 powerfully underscores the insignificance of all nations in God's eyes by comparing them to a drop in a bucket and a speck of dust on a balance. This imagery highlights God’s immense power and sovereignty, suggesting that even mighty empires are but trivial compared to His divine presence. The verse emphasizes that these nations can neither withstand nor thwart the divine plans, reinforcing the theme of God's control over all creation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And Lebanon -The expression here refers to the trees or the cedars of Lebanon. Thus it is rendered by the Chaldee: ‘And the trees of Lebanon.’ For a description of Lebanon, see the note atIsaiah 10:34. It is probable that the word Lebanon here is not used in the limited sense in which it is sometimes employed, to denote a single mountain, or a single range of mountains, but includes the entire ranges lying north of Palestine, and which were comprehended under the general name of Libanus.
