Isaiah 19:10

"Moreover those who work in combed flax, and those who weave white cloth, will be confounded."

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 19:10, the prophet foresees a time of distress for Egypt’s skilled workers—those who refine flax to make linen and those who weave white cloth. The original audience would have understood these occupations as crucial economic activities. Linen was highly valued in ancient Egypt for its quality and versatility, often used in clothing, temple garments, and burial shrouds. The verse suggests that even these skilled trades, typically a source of pride and prosperity, will be overwhelmed by the broader socio-political upheaval prophesied for Egypt, highlighting the comprehensive impact of divine judgment on all aspects of society.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And they shall be broken -There has been a great variety of opinion in regard to the interpretation of this verse, and much difficulty in the construction of the Hebrew words. The Vulgate renders it, ‘And its wet places shall fail; all who make ponds to take fish.’ The Septuagint, ‘And all who make beer (ζύθονzuthon) shall lament, and shall afflict their souls.’ Thisζύθονzuthonwas a sort of malt liquor made of fruits by fermentation, and was used in Egypt in the place of wine, since the grape did not flourish there.
