Isaiah 10:12

"shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?"

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 10:12, the Lord is addressing the king of Assyria, warning him that just as he had judged and destroyed Samaria and its idols, so too would he bring judgment upon Jerusalem and its religious practices if they continued to resist divine correction. The original audience would have understood this in light of recent history, where the Assyrian Empire had already conquered and punished Israel for their idolatry and disobedience; thus, a similar fate was looming over Judah if they did not repent.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Wherefore ... -In this verse God, by the prophet, threatens punishment to the king of Assyria for his pride, and wicked designs. His whole work -His entire plan in regard to the punishment of the Jews. He sent the king of Assyria for a specific purpose to execute his justice on the people of Jerusalem. That plan he would execute entirely by the hand of Sennacherib, and would “then” inflict deserved, punishment on Sennacherib himself, for his wicked purposes.
