Hebrews 9:14

"For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify to the cleanness of the flesh,"

Key Reflection

Hebrews 9:14 highlights the limitations of animal sacrifices in achieving true spiritual cleansing. The verse refers to how the blood of goats and bulls, along with the ashes of a heifer used for ceremonial purification, could only cleanse individuals physically and ceremonially, but not spiritually. This context underscores the need for a more effective sacrifice, pointing towards Jesus Christ's ultimate atonement as described later in Hebrews 9:15-28, where He is presented as the mediator of a new covenant that brings true redemption through His own blood.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 14. How much more shall the blood of Christ. As being infinitely more precious than the blood of an animal could possibly be. If the blood of an animal had any efficacy at all, even in removing ceremonial pollutions, how much more is it reasonable to suppose may be effected by the blood of the Son of God! Who through the eternal Spirit. This expression is very difficult, and has given rise to a great variety of interpretation.--Some Mss., instead of eternal here, read holy, making it refer directly to the Holy Spirit. See Wetstein.
