Hebrews 11:3

"For by this, the elders obtained approval."

Key Reflection

Hebrews 11:3 states, "By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible." This verse highlights the concept of creation through faith in divine speech, emphasizing that the physical world came into being through God's spoken word. The cultural context here reflects the ancient belief in a verbal or command-based creation, where God’s commands brought about the cosmos. This idea underscores the power and reality of faith, as it allows believers to grasp the invisible nature of God and His creative act.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 3. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed. The first instance of the strength of faith, which the apostle refers to, is that by which we give credence to the declarations of the Scriptures about the work of creation, Ge 1:3, This is selected first, evidently, because it is the first thing that occurs in the Bible, or is the first thing there narrated in relation to which there is the exercise of faith. He points to no particular instance in which this faith was exercise--for none is especially mentioned--but refers to it as an illustration of the nature of faith which every one might observe in himself.
