Genesis 37:23
"Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father."
Key Reflection
Reuben suggested a way to deal with Joseph that would spare his life but still punish him by humiliation and isolation. The pit in the wilderness symbolized abandonment and vulnerability, reflecting a common practice of using pits for temporary imprisonment or as a means of conveying someone to distant regions. This solution allowed Reuben to save Joseph from the immediate plan to kill him while also avoiding direct responsibility, hoping eventually to redeem his brother and restore him to their father.
