Ezekiel 1:1

"Now in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God."

Key Reflection

Ezekiel 1:1 marks the beginning of Ezekiel's prophetic ministry. The verse provides a precise date for when these visions commenced: the thirtieth year, in the fourth month (likely Tammuz), on the fifth day. This specific timing is significant as it places Ezekiel's call directly following the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 597 BCE, which occurred during his twenty-fifth year. Being among the captives by the river Chebar, a major canal or stream near ancient Babylon, underscores that these visions came while he was exiled from Judah. The vivid imagery and profound experiences described in Ezekiel's visions suggest a divine encounter that would shape his prophetic ministry, setting the stage for his mission to convey God’s message of judgment and hope to both Israel and the nations.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The thirtieth year -being closely connected with as I, is rather in favor of considering this a personal date. It is not improbable that Ezekiel was called to his office at the age prescribed in the Law for LevitesNumbers 4:23,Numbers 4:30, at which age both John the Baptist and our Lord began their ministry. His call is probably to be connected with the letter sent by Jeremiah to the captivesJeremiah 29:0written a few months previously.
