In the book of Deuteronomy, chapter numbers were added much later and did not originally exist in ancient manuscripts. The phrase "Deuteronomy" at the beginning of Deuteronomy 3:1 was likely an editorial addition by scribes to indicate the name of the book. For the original audience, this opening simply marked the start of a new section or topic within the larger work, serving as a transitional reminder that Moses was about to deliver another discourse to the Israelites before their entry into Canaan.
