Daniel 11:10

"He will come into the realm of the king of the south, but he will return into his own land."

Key Reflection

In Daniel 11:10, we see a prophecy about an invasion where the “king of the north” invades the territory of the "king of the south." This king of the north then withdraws his forces back to his own land after the initial incursion. This scenario reflects the geopolitical tensions between regional powers in the ancient Near East, where alliances and conflicts were common. The cultural context underscores the fluidity of these relationships; despite the invasion, there is a return to one's homeland, indicating a limited engagement or strategic retreat before further military maneuvers.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

But his sons shall be stirred up -Margin, “or, war.” The Hebrew word (יתגרוּyı̂theggârû- fromגרהgârâh) means, to be rough; then, in Piel, to excite, stir up; and then, in Hithpa, to excite one’s self, to be stirred up to anger, to make war upon .... Here it means, according to Gesenius (Lexicon), that they would be excited or angry. The reference here, according to Lengerke, Maurer, Gill, and others, is to the son of the king of the north, Seleucus Callinicus. He was killed, according to Justin (lib. xxvii. c. 3), by a fall from his horse.
