Acts 27:23

"Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship."

Key Reflection

In the midst of a perilous sea voyage during which many feared for their lives, Paul reassures his companions that while the ship would be lost, no one aboard would perish. This message came at a critical moment when natural fears and uncertainties were high, as such storms and voyages were fraught with danger in first-century Mediterranean travel. The original audience, understanding the gravity of sea travel, would have appreciated both the immediate comfort and the broader theological implication: divine providence would ensure their safety, even if it meant sacrificing material possessions like the ship.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 23. There stood by me. There appeared to me. The angel of God. The message of God were often communicated by angels. See Heb 1:14. This does not mean that there was any particular angel, but simply an angel. Whose I am. Of the God to whom I belong. This is an expression of Paul's entire devotedness to him. Whom I serve. In the gospel. To whom and to whose cause I am entirely devoted.
