Acts 27:21

"When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away."

Key Reflection

In Acts 27:21, the darkness and storm symbolize overwhelming trials and despair, which temporarily extinguish any sense of security or salvation for the ship's crew. This passage foreshadows the deep spiritual struggles and moments of utter hopelessness that believers may experience during their journey of faith before finding deliverance.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 21. But after long abstinence. By the violence of the storm, by their long-continued labour, and by their apprehension of danger, they had a long time abstained from food. And to have gained this harm. To have procured this harm, or have subjected yourselves to it. Had you remained there, you would have been safe. It seems to be bad English to speak of gaining a loss, but it is a correct translation of the original, kerdhsai, which expresses the idea of acquiring or procuring, whether good or evil. See Ac 27:9,10.
