Romans 8:37

"Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”"

Key Reflection

Romans 8:37 captures a profound truth drawn from Psalm 44:22, highlighting the enduring commitment of believers in Jesus Christ despite overwhelming opposition. The verse evokes the imagery of constant persecution and suffering, likening the faithful to "sheep for the slaughter," which was a common metaphor for those who faced execution or severe punishment, often used of martyrs in the face of religious oppression. This vivid imagery underscores the relentless nature of trials but also affirms that such afflictions are endured not out of guilt or sin, but precisely because believers stand for and uphold the truth of God's covenant with them.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 37. Nay. But. Notwithstanding our severe pressures and trials. In all these things. In the very midst of them; while we are enduring them, we are able to triumph. Comp. 1 Co 15:57. We are more than conquerors. We gain the victory. That is, they have not power to, subdue us; to alienate our love and confi- dence; to produce apostasy. We are the victors, not they. Our faith is not destroyed; our love is not diminished; our hope is not blasted. But it is not simple victory; it is not mere life, and continuance of what we had before; it is more than simple triumph; it augments our faith, increases our strength, expands our love to Christ.
