Romans 8:16
"For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”"
Key Reflection
In Romans 8:16, Paul is addressing the Roman Christians who had already accepted the gospel and experienced the transformation of their relationship with God. The original audience would have understood that receiving the Spirit of adoption meant they were no longer slaves to fear but children of God, entitled to a close, intimate relationship with Him. This new status as adopted children allowed them to call God “Abba,” an Aramaic term for father that conveys both affection and authority, reflecting the deep bond between a father and his child in ancient Jewish culture.
