Psalms 94:8

"They say, “The LORD will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.”"

Key Reflection

In Psalms 94:8, the psalmist captures a common sentiment among those who are skeptical of divine justice and presence. The phrase "The LORD will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider" reflects a prevalent belief that God is indifferent or uncaring about human suffering—a perspective rooted in the experiences of injustice and oppression faced by many ancient Israelites. This verse highlights the tension between the psalmist's trust in God and the disillusionment felt by those who question divine involvement in their lives, a theme that resonates with broader struggles against perceived injustices throughout history.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Understand, ye brutish among the people -SeePsalms 73:22. The meaning here is, “You who are like the brutes; you who see and understand no more of the character and plans of God than the wild beasts of the desert.” The meaning is, that they did not employ their reason in the case; they acted like beasts, regardless of the consequences of their conduct - as if God would treat people as he does the beasts; as if there were no retribution in the future world.
