Psalms 94:2

"LORD, you God to whom vengeance belongs, you God to whom vengeance belongs, shine out."

Key Reflection

In Psalms 94:2, the psalmist addresses Yahweh as the one who holds the power of vengeance, emphasizing this twice for emphasis. This declaration reflects the historical context of ancient Israel where divine retribution was a central theme. The original audience would have understood that when calamity struck their enemies or even themselves, it was seen as God's just punishment for wrongdoing. Thus, by invoking Yahweh’s role in exacting vengeance, the psalmist calls upon him to act against wrongdoers and restore justice, reinforcing the belief that divine retribution ultimately brings order to a chaotic world.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Lift up thyself -Be exalted or lifted up so as to be manifest in thy true character. The idea is that God was, as it were, sitting at his ease, or as if he were indifferent to what was occurring in the world. See the notes atPsalms 3:7. Thou Judge of the earth -Ruler of the world; to whom it pertains to exercise judgment over all classes of people, and in all circumstances. The meaning here is, that as he was the Ruler of the whole earth, this matter came without doubt under his jurisdiction. It was a case for his interposition.
