Psalms 9:5

"For you have maintained my just cause. You sit on the throne judging righteously."

Key Reflection

Psalms 9:5 reflects a psalmist's confident declaration of God’s justice and righteousness, both in maintaining his own righteous cause and in His role as a just judge on the throne. This verse underscores the sovereignty of God, depicting Him not only as the ultimate arbiter of justice but also as the guarantor of the psalmist's right to seek and receive justice from Him. The imagery of sitting upon a throne conveys authority and permanence, suggesting that God's judgment is both enduring and fair, aligning perfectly with His nature as a just ruler.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou hast rebuked the heathen -Not the pagan in general, or the nations at large, but those who are particularly referred to in this psalm - those who are described as the enemies of the writer and of God. On the word rendered “heathen” here -גויםgôyim- see the notes atPsalms 2:1. The word rebuke here does not mean, as it does usually with us, to chide with words, but it means that he had done this by deeds; that is, by overcoming or vanquishing them.
