Psalms 84:9

"LORD, God of Armies, hear my prayer. Listen, God of Jacob. Selah."

Key Reflection

Psalms 84:9 is a powerful invocation to the Lord, expressing deep faith and devotion. The psalmist addresses the LORD as "God of Armies," highlighting his might and sovereignty, particularly in military contexts. By addressing him thus, the psalmist invokes divine protection and intervention. Following this, the psalmist prays for God's hearing, invoking his name as "the God of Jacob," emphasizing personal relationship and covenantal loyalty. The term "Selah" at the end often indicates a pause or musical interlude in the song, suggesting that these words were meant to be spoken with particular solemnity and reverence.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Behold, O God our shield -Our defense, as a shield is a defense in the day of battle. ComparePsalms 5:12, note;Psalms 18:2, note;Psalms 33:20, note. It is an appeal to God as a protector. The psalmist was an exile - a wanderer - and he looked to God as his defense. And look upon the face of thine anointed -Look favorably upon; look with benignity and kindness. The word anointed here is the word “Messiah” -משׁיחmâshı̂yach(Greek,ΧριστόςChristos, “Christ”; see the notes atMatthew 1:1). Compare the notes atPsalms 2:2.
