Psalms 84:6

"Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on a pilgrimage."

Key Reflection

Psalms 84:6 speaks of blessedness for those who find their strength in God and who passionately pursue spiritual journeys. This verse reflects the idea that true strength comes from God, not from worldly means, highlighting the importance of relying on divine support for one's faith and pilgrimage. The cultural context underscores this by contrasting human frailty with divine steadfastness, emphasizing that only through a deep commitment to God can one truly persevere in their spiritual journey.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Who passing through the valley of Baca -This is one of the most difficult verses in the Book of Psalms, and has been, of course, very variously interpreted. The Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate, Luther, and Professor Alexander, render it a valley of tears. The word “Baca” (בכאbâkâ') means properly weeping, lamentation; and then it is given to a certain tree - not probably a mulberry tree, but some species of balsam - from its weeping; that is, because it seemed to distil tears, or drops of balsam resembling tears in size and appearance.
