Psalms 146:7

"who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever;"

Key Reflection

In the context of first-century Israel, Psalms 146:7 would have resonated deeply as a statement of God's omnipotence and faithfulness. The psalmist declares that God created heaven and earth, the sea, and all within them—emphasizing His sovereignty over nature and creation. By asserting that God "keeps truth forever," the text underscores His reliability in keeping promises and maintaining justice—a crucial message for a people often oppressed by human rulers who failed to uphold their word or provide for the poor and oppressed. This passage would have reinforced the Israelites' belief in a God who not only established the cosmos but also remained faithful to His covenant with them, offering hope amidst suffering and injustice.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Which executeth judgment for the oppressed -This is the third reason why the lot of those is a happy one who trust in God. It is because he has power to pronounce and execute a right judgment or sentence in regard to the oppressed and the wronged, and because it is characteristic of his nature that he does thus execute judgment. See the notes atPsalms 103:6: “The Lord executeth right. eousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.” Which giveth food to the hungry -See the notes atPsalms 107:9: “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” This is the fourth reason why they who confide in God are happy.
