Psalms 136:1

"Psalms."

Key Reflection

The opening of Psalm 136 with its simple declaration, "Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever," immediately sets a tone of gratitude and acknowledges divine benevolence. This opening line would have resonated deeply with ancient Israelites, who lived in a world where natural phenomena, disasters, and daily life were often understood through a lens of divine action or response. The formulaic nature of the verse—emphasizing constant thanksgiving and eternal kindness—would have been familiar, reinforcing the importance of consistently recognizing God's ongoing favor and faithfulness in their lives.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good -This whole verse is the same asPsalms 106:1, except that that is introduced by a Hallelujah. See the notes at that verse. For his mercy endureth for ever -See alsoPsalms 106:1, note;Psalms 107:1, note. Literally, “For unto eternity his mercy.” That is, It is ever the same; it never changes; it is never exhausted; it is found in all his dealings - in all his acts toward his creatures, and ever will be.
