Psalms 116:6

"The LORD is gracious and righteous. Yes, our God is merciful."

Key Reflection

Psalms 116:6 succinctly encapsulates a profound affirmation of God’s character and His relationship with humanity. The psalmist declares that the Lord is both "gracious" (הַמְצֵל, hamtsel) and "righteous" (צַדִּיק, tsaddik). In Hebrew culture, being "gracious" implies God’s willingness to show favor and kindness even to those who do not deserve it. The term "righteous" (צַדִּיק, tsaddiq) speaks to God's moral integrity and His commitment to justice. Together, these attributes underscore a divine character that is both compassionate in offering mercy and just in administering judgment, setting the stage for trust and confidence in God’s faithful care.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The Lord preserveth the simple -The Septuagint renders this “babes” -νήπιαnēpia. The Hebrew word has reference to simplicity or folly, as inProverbs 1:22. It then refers to those who are the opposite of cautious or cunning; to those who are open to persuasion; to those who are easily enticed or seduced. The verb from which the word is derived -פתהpâthâh- means to open, to expand; then, to be open, frank, ingenuous, easily persuaded or enticed. Thus it may express either the idea of being simple in the sense of being foolish, easily seduced and led astray; or, simple in the sense of being open, frank, ingenuous, trustful, sincere. The latter is evidently its meaning here.
