Psalms 116:12

"I said in my haste, “All people are liars.”"

Key Reflection

In first-century Palestine, Psalms 116:12 reflects a common sentiment among those who had experienced betrayal and unfaithfulness. The psalmist's exclamation, "All people are liars," encapsulates the disillusionment of someone whose trust has been deeply broken. This phrase would resonate with the audience as an expression of their own experiences of deceit and disloyalty in both personal and communal contexts, highlighting the pervasive nature of untrustworthiness in a society often marred by political and social strife.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? -All his “recompences,” - the same word which inPsalms 116:7is rendered “hath dealt bountifully.” The question here has reference to that. What return can be equal to his bounties; what will be a proper acknowledgment of them; with what can I repay him for them all? The question is a natural and a proper question.
