Psalms 105:39

"Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them."

Key Reflection

The people of Egypt rejoiced when the Israelites left, a reaction rooted in their deep-seated fear and respect for the Israelites' god, Yahweh. The narrative context reveals that Yahweh had delivered the Israelites from slavery through miracles, including turning their staff into a snake and their water into blood (Exodus 7-8). These powerful signs instilled such dread in Egypt that they feared any further divine intervention if the Israelites remained, leading them to be relieved and even pleased with their departure.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He spread a cloud for a covering -See the notes atPsalms 78:14. InNumbers 10:34; it is said that “the cloud of the Lord was upon them by day,” and from this seems to have been derived the idea of its “covering” them, as if it were a protection from the heat in the desert.
