Psalms 104:10

"You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, that they don’t turn again to cover the earth."

Key Reflection

In the context of ancient Near Eastern literature and culture, Psalm 104:10 reflects a common motif where divine creation sets clear boundaries to maintain order. The psalmist is likely speaking about how God has established limits for animals, ensuring they do not overstep their designated territories or revert to chaotic behaviors that could disrupt the harmony of nature. This idea of controlled and orderly existence would have resonated with the original audience, emphasizing the sovereign authority of God in creation and His role in maintaining cosmic order.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He sendeth the springs into the valleys -Though the waters are gathered together into seas, yet God has taken care that the earth shall not be dry, parched, and barren. He has made provision for watering it, and by a most wise, wonderful, and benevolent arrangement, he has formed springs among the valleys and the hills. It is now animated nature which comes before the eye of the psalmist; and all this he traces to the fact that the earth is “watered,” and that it is not a waste of rocks and sands.
