Psalms 102:5

"My heart is blighted like grass, and withered, for I forget to eat my bread."

Key Reflection

In Psalm 102:5, the author poetically describes their physical state as a reflection of their spiritual despair. The imagery of the heart being "blighted like grass and withered" underscores a sense of extreme desolation and loss of vitality, much like plants that have been deprived of water or nutrients. This verse vividly conveys the deep emotional and possibly physical suffering experienced by someone who has forgotten to nourish themselves, symbolizing a spiritual famine—possibly due to neglecting God's provision or feeling forsaken.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

By reason of the voice of my groaning -By suffering and trouble, so great as to produce groaning, my flesh is wasted away. My bones cleave to my skin -Margin, “flesh.” The Hebrew word means “flesh.” The effect described is that of a wasting away or an emaciation of flesh from deep distress, so that the bones became prominent, and had nothing to hide them from view; so that they seemed to adhere fast to the flesh itself. See the notes atJob 19:20.
