Proverbs 17:4

"The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the hearts."

Key Reflection

This verse uses metaphors of refining metals to illustrate God's process of testing and purifying his people. Just as a refiner tests silver in a pot and gold in a furnace, so too does the Lord examine the sincerity and faithfulness of human hearts, preparing them for greater service or judgment.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The two clauses describe two phases of the mutual affinities of evil. The evil-doer delights in lies, the liar in bad words.
